Bio

Elisabeth looks at power structures and hierarchies in her works. She shows curiosity about how informal and formal systems of power work in our societies. She plays with humour, contrasts and rhythm.

- I am interested in marginalised groups, and how they are viewed and treated as “the Other”. My focus is on how power relations might be analysed and manipulated visually. I build my work on the theory of deconstruction by Jacques Derrida and Barthes writings about Sign and Signification. I am inspired by artist like Ahmed Umar, Madhukar Mucharla, Senga Nengudi and Claudette Schreuders.

Elisabeth holds a masters degree in Gender Studies from UKZN in Durban. The dual experience of knowledge gained from her research, and her experiences from living in the South African society, influences her work.

During lessons and workshops she is very involved in the students learning processes and well being. Her focus is on creativity and interdisciplinary approaches.
